"Raining Cats and Dogs" refers to very heavy rain.

The first published use of the phrase "raining cats and dogs" appears to be in 1776 in the London publication of the book 'RichardSonia: or, Occasional Reflections on the Moral Nature of Man.' Common use of the phrase in the U.S. appears to be in the mid 1800's. Usage steadily increased to it's peak in current times.

Use Example - Wow! It's been raining cats and dogs for two hours now. We are going to be flooded!
